Phantom Self / Blurred Sense of Self (2025)

On social VR platforms such as VRChat, there is a phenomenon known as phantom sense. A person who develops this sense can experience the touches from other users on their physical body. Some describe these sensations as a strong pressure, warmth, or tingling. Is this just an illusion? Or is the virtual body a temporary extension of the physical one?

For Blurred Sense of Self, Simon Johannesson uses photogrammetry (a technique dating to 1840, revolutionized by digital tools). By photographing a subject from multiple angles, he generates a 3D model. And in one of the stages of this process a sparse point cloud is produced, which was used to create Phantom Self. These images were not generated using AI.
